This presentation will provide information and principles involved in attaining and achieving leadership positions in various areas of careers in psychology.  The presenter is the first Latina/o and first woman of color president of the American Psychological Association, out of 120 APA presidencies.  Basic leadership principles as well as the presenter’s “lessons learned” and personal experiences will be shared as strategies for a successful, healthy and productive process in attaining and maintaining leadership positions.  Entering a world that requires navigating “microaggressions,” stereotypes, and one’s own issues such as the “imposter syndrome” will be reviewed. Strategies to engage in productive work while balancing family and other aspects of self care will be identified.

Latina Icons Bridge the Past & the Future

Patricia Arredondo, Ed.D.

There is no doubt that Latinas are at the heart of familias and serve as anchors for maintaining and passing on la cultura.  Because I/we as Latinas are multidimensional beings, it is necessary to acknowledge the icons that influence our personhood, sense of empowerment, and spiritual strength. From La Malinche, La Virgen de Guadalupe, and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz to Julia de Burgos, Gloria Anzaldúa and Sonia Sotomayor, we have exceptional Latina models of grace, resilience and self-determination. At the same time, I believe in starting entre familia to recognize abuelas, madres, tias, hermanas, primas, madrinas and other unheralded icons  who effectively opened pathways for me.
