APA Presidential Candidates

Dear APA Presidential Candidates,

I am writing on behalf of the executive council of the National Latina/o Psychological Association. Many of our NLPA members are also APA members. In an effort to support our members’ in making an informed decision regarding voting for the next APA president, we are asking each of your to submit a statement addressing issues of high relevance to our NLPA members. These statements will be posted on the NLPA website with an announcement sent to the NLPA listserv. I am hopeful that you can return statements within two weeks so that we may post them in a timely manner. We understand that each of you will respond in the way that best fits your communications style. We provide the following questions to provide some structure regarding issues that are relevant to our members. It would be optimal if you could address these in your statement:

  • How do you see that psychology is currently addressing the mental health needs of individuals who live in theU.S.and have a Latina/o background?
  • What do you think Psychology, and APA, can do to better serve the mental health needs of individuals who live in theU.S.and have a Latina/o background?
  • What do you think are the biggest successes in clinical work from the field in addressing the needs of Latinos?
  • What do you think remains to be done?
  • What do you think are the biggest successes in research from the field in addressing the needs of Latinos?
  • What do you think remains to be done?
  • What do you think are the biggest successes in teaching from the field in addressing the needs of Latinos?
  • What do you think remains to be done?
  • What specific initiatives are you committed to for the advancement of Latino mental health during your presidential year?

I look forward to reading your statements soon. Warmly, Melanie M. Domenech Rodríguez
