Proposal Submission Criteria
Submission of posters, papers, symposia, and roundtables are encouraged in the following areas:
1. Social, psychological and culture based models that explicate physical and mental wellness pertaining to both individual and communities of Latinas.
2. Findings that concern the state-of-the-art psychological treatments for Latinas dealing with mental and medical health disorders, with particular attention to those disorders that Latinas have predispositions toward or where they remain underserved in treatment, including (but not limited to) stress, anxiety, depression, obesity, cancers, and diabetes.
3. Public health policy and legislation concerning the criteria, funding, and delivery of social services to Latinas and children.
4. Culturally competent psychological interventions for Latinas within the institutional, community, family, and individual realms and across the developmental life spectrum (i.e., infancy, youth, adolescent, adult, and elders) including (but not limited to) immigration, acculturation, identity development (e.g., gender, racial/cultural, sexual), spirituality, religiosity, family systems, K-12 through higher education experiences, and experiences of prejudice and discrimination.
5. The health and well being of Latina professionals (broadly defined) and issues of professional development. Foci such as mentoring, networking, positive coping, working within male and European dominated environments, and addressing the retention and advancement of Latinas in the professions at various levels (e.g., undergraduate, graduate, early/mid/late career, retirement). Of particular interest is the health and well being of Latinas in the profession of psychology, in academic, clinical and other psychology-based vocations.
Pre-conference Workshops & Presentations (Thursday, November 11th):
These workshops will address practical aspects of enhancing the strength and resilience of Latinas in all areas of their everyday experience. Experienced practitioners and researchers are encouraged to submit programs that focus on issues such as stress and coping, diet and nutrition, relationship issues, sexuality and sexual orientation development, vocational development, relaxation and self-awareness. Each workshop will fulfill specific requirements for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) across disciplines (e.g., Psychology Marriage & Family, Social Work, Nursing) and will provide participants a quality hands-on experience through didactic teaching, person-to-person activities, and self-reflection opportunities to facilitate the learning process.
Submission Guidelines
General Submission Instructions:Contact information for all presenters (names, institution/agency affiliations, email, address, and phone number) should be at the top of the proposal page or summary page for symposia. Submit all proposals in .pdf format (Adobe Acrobat) through the submission portal at www.nlpa.ws (the NLPA website). Faxes or hard copies will not be accepted.
Deadlines: All proposals are due by 5:00 PM CST on June 1, 2010. No exceptions. Authors will be notified of final decisions by June 1, 2010. All presenters are required to register for the conference; presenters are strongly encouraged to join NLPA before the conference if they are not already members.
Papers, Roundtables, & Symposia – Papersare 15-minute individual presentations that will be read in groups of 3 with time for audience discussions. A roundtable features one or two experts in an area who lead a discussion on a specific topic. For papers and roundtables, submit an abstract of less than 500 words describing the nature and content of the discussion to be presented during the session. Symposia are an opportunity for three or four people (including discussant) to each present data findings and scholarly ideas on the same topic. For a symposia, each presenter needs to submit an abstract of less than 500 words describing the nature and content of her or his individual portion of the symposium. The individual abstracts of a symposium must be packaged as a single proposal document. This single document must be prefaced by a summary of 500 words or less (composed by the symposium chairperson) describing the overall focus of the panel. All papers, roundtables, and symposia occur within a one-hour session. Along with abstracts, three (3) learning objectives for each paper, roundtable, or symposia must be submitted.
Posters - Poster presentations are an opportunity to present data findings and scholarly ideas during a one-hour session. A poster presentation must fit on a 4' x 6' board. Submit an abstract of 500 words or less describing the nature and content of the research to be presented in the poster session.
