NLPA's Mentoring Program is pleased to invite you to its next webinar: Latinx Scholar Identity Development: Voces Por La Justicia by Dr. Jeanett Castellanos.

The event will take place on Wednesday, July 30, at 10 am Pacific Time (11 am Mountain Time, 12 pm Central Time, 1pm Eastern time).

Dr. Castellanos will discuss a mentorship research model that notes the shaping of Latinx scholar identities. A multi-tiered model, the author will describe the role of empowerment, cultural awareness, cultural validation, cultural meaning, and social consciousness in scholarship. A multigeneration model, data supports the efficaciousness of the model and the factors that are necessary to recruit, retain, and excel evolving scholars in psychology. In particular, the importance of the 5 educational pillars, cultural consciousness, and social responsibility will be covered. The role of cultural understanding, critical thought in scholarship, academic family, generational and peer mentorship, and graduate school partnerships will also be addressed.

 

Questions for Graduate Students:


1) Who has been the most influential figure in forming your educational dreams?
2)What academic community do you have in place to empower and support you?
3) Is scholarship a hurdle to jump for your program or an empowering toll to inform, deconstruct power, and instill change?
4) How can scholarship become a healing tool for change and wellness?
5) What social contribution and social change do you envision with your work?
6) How are you assisting, teaching, modeling, and supporting the newer generations of scholars?


Questions for Mentors


1) How do you empower and inspire your mentees to pursue critical research that advances community?
2)How do you honor your mentees' voices, values, and roots in the development of shaping of their scholarship identity?
3) As a mentor, what values do you promote in the context of scholarship and academic excellence?
4) What specific processes do you engage to ensure your mentee is shaping a healthy scholarly identity and a scholarly community?
5) How do you model for them and validate their realities?
6) What academic family do facilitate?
7) What educational partnerships and opportunities do you have in place to facilitate the advancement of your mentees?
